Enemies of the Cross

Paul makes a distinction here concerning the people who, instead of looking to Jesus, look to earthly things.  When he said “god is their belly” he means that all they have is the temporary things of the world in mind for their satisfaction – like a glutton who continually eats to satisfy himself, so these people continuously follow the pleasures of the world.  Lord, help us to put worldly things behind us and look to you for our pleasure.

For many walk, of whom I have told you often, and now tell you even weeping, that they are the enemies of the cross of Christ: whose end is destruction, whose god is their belly, and whose glory is in their shame—who set their mind on earthly things.
